Subject: Antenna question?
To: info-hams@ucsd.edu
I would like to get your opinion on an HF antenna setup I would like to do.
I want to operate my ft890at on 20, 17 and 15 meters. The ft890at have
an automatic antenna tuner built in and have 100 watts output.
I have a small lot with a 40 ft tower on one side. No room for a beam,
so I am considering a vertical like the R5. My other choice would be
an insulated pipe on top of the tower connected to a remote antenna tuner
like the SGC 230.

SYNOPSIS OF ACTIVITY

Solar activity was very low. Region 7762 (N06E70)
produced three subfaint flares. A filament lifted off the
northeast quadrant.
Solar activity forecast: solar activity is expected to be
very low.
The geomagnetic field has been at quiet levels.
Geophysical activity forecast: the geomagnetic field is
expected to be quiet, changing to unsettled for day 2 and day 3.
High latitude stations may experience active periods on day 3.

HF propagation conditions were near-normal over all
regions. Similar conditions are expected over the next 24

disturbance may begin increasing high-latitude signal
degradation on 04 and 05 August. Otherwise, near-normal
propagation will continue.

Haven't been following this thread till now, but here is an
additional factoid. In 1959, when the FCC first unleashed the
Class D Citizens Band (Radio for Everyone!), the highly-paid
lawyers apparently were asleep. Licenses were mandatory, and
the application forms were either provided with the equipment
or you had to send to the FCC to get them. The callsigns
were assigned by a scheme in which the prefix was the
FCC radio district, a number, followed by a W and a number.
The TV shop I worked for (my elmers, W8FBX and K8UOF hired me
there, thanks guys!) had an early call, 19W3091, I believe.
Shortly thereafter, all CB calls had to be reassigned.
A 19W, etc call did not fall within ITU guidelines for a
proper US callsign. The KBXX2211 series then was instituted.
By then many operators had discovered leenyars. The FCC gave up.

Maybe he is referring to the widespread use of TheNet, a ripoff of

Needless to say, WA8DED has not since written any new amateur radio

To: info-hams@ucsd.edu
I'd like to hear of experiences any hams have with the X-10 home
automation systems, and whether they operated correctly in the
presence of RF (160 meters through microwaves will be used near them
if I use the X-10 stuff at all), and whether the X10 stuff caused
any interference to any ham bands.
The X-10 communications occurs using carrier current at 120kHz over
the power lines.
Any and all information about experiences with these devices would
be appreciated.

I've been licensed 30 years, and held what was once the top license
until the FCC changed the rules of the game. I've tried most aspects
of amateur radio at one time or the other. You can't really know what
aspect of amateur radio is going to be most attractive to you until
you try it.
The Tech license opens a lot of doors for you, and may be exactly what
you need for what you want to do. However, if you do find you want to
explore HF, you currently do have to deal with the manual Morse testing
requirement. I'd suggest getting the Tech and using that to do your
initial exploration of amateur radio. If HF operation still seems like
it might be attractive, buy a shortwave receiver and listen for a while.
If you get excited by what you hear, then you might want to tackle the
code to 5 WPM. That'll get you a taste of HF operating, and if actual
on the air contacts at HF excite you, then you'll want to push on to
General, Advanced, or Extra to get more HF frequencies. Extra isn't
very attractive because you don't get much for the pain of dealing with
an archaic 20 WPM manual Morse test. Advanced is the best value in terms
of priviledges. However you may find Morse easy and fun (you may have a
wreck on the way to the test session too, IMHO the odds are about the same
as your finding manual Morse fun). Anyway, give it a try, you might be
one of those rare people who have the idiot savant talent to be a natural
modem. You can't know until you try.
>PS I am having a hard time finding out where to take my technician no
>code examination in the Minneapolis area. Anyone know who to contact?
Contact the ARRL. They have lists of test sessions in your area, and who
to contact to arrange your test.

Al, WWV is the station (actually two stations) that broadcast time and
frequency standards here in the U.S.. They also broadcast storm
warnings to the Pacific and a few other things. Most of the audio
consists of time clicks, with voice at the end and beginning of each
minute. Anyone laughing you off the group should be ashamed at
themselves for not noting your U.K. location.

It's a riot listening to 5, 10, and 15 MHz out here in the Central
Pacific! There's about a dozen countries around the Pacific rim that
transmit time signals on those frequencies; what a mess listening
to them all ID, and the combined tones sound like a piano with all
the keys depressed.
